Daroji Bear Sanctuary: A Sloth Bear Haven in Hampi Guide

Escape the ancient ruins of Hampi for a while and step into a different kind of wonder at the Daroji Bear Sanctuary. This unique sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation of the Indian Sloth Bear, offering a rare opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. It's a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts and anyone looking for a break from the historical sites. Prepare to be amazed as you witness these shaggy bears going about their daily lives, foraging for food and playing with each other. The Daroji Bear Sanctuary was established in 1994 to protect the dwindling population of sloth bears in the region. The rocky, scrub-filled landscape provides an ideal habitat for these animals, and the sanctuary has played a crucial role in their conservation. Before its establishment, the area was heavily impacted by habitat loss and poaching. Today, the sanctuary is a safe haven for the bears, and their numbers have steadily increased. The sanctuary also works to educate local communities about the importance of conservation and the role that sloth bears play in the ecosystem. The main activity at Daroji Bear Sanctuary is, of course, bear watching! The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, as the bears emerge from their daytime slumber to forage for food. There are designated viewing points within the sanctuary where you can observe the bears from a safe distance. Remember to bring your binoculars for a closer look! While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the sanctuary itself, Hampi offers a variety of South Indian cuisine. Be sure to try local favorites like dosas, idlis, and uttapam at nearby restaurants.
